What is a root canal treatment and why do i need root canal treatment?

Root Canal Treatment is a procedure to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it. The term Root Canal comes from cleaning of the canal inside the tooths root so that you are relieved of the severe pain. The procedure involves removing the damaged/infected area of the tooth, known as the pulp which consists of nerves and blood vessels, cleaning and disinfecting it, then filling and sealing it by an artificial inert filling material.

What will happen during the rct procedure?

The first step in the procedure is to take an X-ray to see the shape of the root canals and determine if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. Your Endodontist will then use Local Anaesthesia to numb the area near the tooth making you more relaxed and comfortable. An access hole will then be drilled into the tooth. The pulp along with the bacteria, the decayed nerve tissue and related debris is removed from the tooth with the help of Root Canal Files. Different irrigating solutions are then used to flush out the debris. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, it is sealed after filling the cleaned root canals with a rubber-like material, using an adhesive cement to seal the canals completely. After the Root Canal is completed, the tooth will likely need a crown to protect it from fracturing in the future.

Is root canal treatment painful?

When a person is told that he/she needs a Root Canal treatment (RCT), the person usually thinks of pain. However, the pain felt is caused by an infection in the tooth and is not caused by the Root canal treatment. RCT in fact is done to eliminate the pain and the procedure itself is painless. Would extraction (pulling the tooth) be a better alternative?

While the upfront cost of RCT is higher, tooth extractions often lead to long term costs. When you get a tooth extraction done, the gap formed by the lost tooth will typically be required to be replaced by a dental bridge, implant or a partial denture (all of which are more expensive than RCT). Keep your teeth free of decay by brushing and flossing each day. Follow healthy diet, low in sugar and stay away from strong acidic drinks.
